Shopify product image size and theme advice
Shopify accepts product images up to 5000×5000, and the size worth uploading is 2048×2048. Square, at that size, gives every theme enough to work with and leaves room for high-density screens.
Unlike Amazon, Shopify does not force a white background: any background. That freedom is the trap. Without a fixed rule, a store ends up with a grid of images shot on six different surfaces, and the grid looks like a flea market next to a competitor whose photos match.
Opens with the Product image (recommended square) preset selected (2048×2048, cap 20480KB). Drop your images in and export.
The sizes Shopify lists
| Spec | Value | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|
| Working size | 2048×2048 | Upload at this size. It covers retina storefronts and leaves room for theme crops. |
| Aspect ratio | 1:1 | Square sources behave predictably in every theme grid. |
| Ceiling | 5000×5000 | Anything larger is not accepted, and does nothing more for you. |
| File size cap | 20480KB | Stay under this. A well-compressed 2048 px square is usually far smaller. |
| Background | any background | No forced background. Consistency is your decision, not the platform requirement. |
| Formats | JPG / PNG | Upload one of these, then let Shopify serve the derivatives. |
A 2048×2048 square is not just about sharpness. It is the size at which a theme can crop to a portrait card, a square grid tile, or a wide collection banner without resorting to upscaling from a smaller source.
Why 2048 and not the file you exported five years ago
Storefronts render several sizes of the same image: a small grid thumbnail, a product page hero, a zoomed view, and a cart line item. Shopify generates those derivatives from the file you upload. If the upload is only as large as the largest place you happen to look at today, the zoom view and the high-density screens get a stretched version.
The practical rule: upload once at 2048×2048, let the platform handle the smaller sizes. Uploading at the ceiling of 5000×5000 does not improve the storefront, because every customer-side derivative is smaller than that anyway, and the extra pixels make the file heavier on both ends of the connection.
File weight has a ceiling too: 20480KB. A flat, well-lit product shot at 2048 px usually compresses far below it. If you are close to the limit, the problem is usually noise or an unedited high-ISO original, not the dimensions.
What the theme does to your crop
Themes crop for layout. A collection grid may use square tiles while the product page uses a taller card, and a featured-collection banner may use something wider still. Your source image is the only thing all three can agree on.
That is the argument for square at 1:1 as a default: a square source cropped to portrait loses left and right margin, which is usually empty space. A wide source cropped to square loses product edges, which is not recoverable.
Center the product and leave a consistent margin on all four sides. If your product is tall and thin, do not zoom in to fill the frame — the margin is what makes the portrait crop survivable.
Prepare a Shopify product image in five steps
- Start from the biggest original: At least 2048×2048 if you have it. Do not invent pixels to get there.
- Crop square around the product: Leave an even margin. Square is what the majority of themes expect for grid tiles.
- Decide the background once, for the whole store: Shopify allows any background, so pick a look and keep it. White, light gray, or a consistent studio scene all work; mixing them does not.
- Resize to the working size: Export at 2048×2048 and check the file stays under 20480KB.
- Name the file before upload: Use the product name and variant, lowercase with hyphens. A readable filename helps you find the asset later and reads better if a URL is ever exposed.
Shopify versus marketplaces that force white
If you sell on your own store and on marketplaces from the same catalog, you will be maintaining two visual languages. Marketplaces that require pure white (RGB 255, 255, 255) want flat white; a Shopify store can carry the version with a scene, a shadow, and a styled surface.
The efficient arrangement is one master cutout per product plus one styled shot. Derive the white marketplace files from the cutout, and the store files from the styled shot. Both are generated from a source you already approved.
| Channel | Image size | Background |
|---|---|---|
| Shopify | 2048×2048 | any background |
| Amazon | 1000×1000 | pure white (RGB 255, 255, 255) |
| Walmart | 2000×2000 | pure white (RGB 255, 255, 255) |
| SHEIN | 800×1000 | pure white (RGB 255, 255, 255) |
Mistakes that cost you a re-upload
- Uploading a screenshot or a supplier image with a visible watermark. It is your storefront, not theirs.
- Pushing contrast and saturation until the product color no longer matches what ships.
- Shipping images with different margins, so the collection grid looks ragged at thumbnail size.
- Filling the frame edge to edge, which leaves the theme no room to crop to a portrait card.
- Skipping alt text. It is both an accessibility requirement and the closest thing an image has to a searchable label.
Build the folder once, upload once
Run the whole collection through the batch image tool at 2048×2048 with your chosen background, download the ZIP, then upload in one pass instead of editing images one at a time. Processing happens in the browser, so the folder never leaves your machine.
Frequently asked questions
What is the recommended Shopify product image size?
2048×2048, square. It satisfies high-density storefronts and leaves cropping room for themes. The platform ceiling is 5000×5000, but uploading at the ceiling brings no visible benefit.
Does Shopify require a white background?
No. The spec records the background as any background. Consistency across your own catalog matters more than matching a rule that does not exist.
What is the Shopify image file size limit?
20480KB. If you are near that, compress the file rather than shrinking the dimensions.
Should product images be square or portrait?
Square is the safer default because most themes crop from a square source without losing product edges. Portrait cards are generated by the theme from that square; you do not need to upload a portrait copy.
Can I use PNG instead of JPG on Shopify?
The platform lists JPG / PNG. Use PNG when you need transparency or flat-color graphics, and JPG for photographic product shots where file weight matters.
